About Dr. Anna Yam

California License PSY27651

My style is open, practical and engaging. I strive to learn about your experience in the world, meet you where you are, and support you on your path to a fulfilling life.

When I was a teenager, I worked as a tutor and a counselor with children with autism. This experience helped me see the world through different eyes and made me want to learn more. In college at UC San Diego, I studied human development (classes about the brain, psychology, learning, babies, and more). I also studied linguistics because I love languages. I am fluent in Russian, and pretty solid in Spanish and American Sign Language. Linguistics is also the study of cultures and a wonderful introduction to the diversity and similarity of peoples in the world.

I did my graduate training in Florida (Go Gators!) which included a lot of clinical work (therapy, assessment), research, and sweating. Though Florida is most known for being strange and accident-prone (these days), it has lots of charm. I had a great time paddling around on in it's many streams, swimming with the manatees, and admiring the alligators, big and small. After completing all of my training (7 years in total), I got a wonderful job as the staff psychologist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Kaiser San Francisco. In that role, I was also the regional pain psychologist at the Center for Pelvic Pain. You can see my full Curriculum Vitae here.

After moving back to San Diego, I founded Bloom Psychology, which is my private psychology practice. I love private practice because it allows me to do what I do best with max freedom. I love supporting women, parents, couples and older adults with the real difficulties they face in our modern world. In prior generations, we all lived in large families, villages and tribes. We didn't have to do all this adulting by ourselves the way we do now. Feeling lonely and overwhelmed in the modern world? You are not alone.
