FAQ
Beginning therapy is a meaningful step, and it’s natural to have questions about what to expect. Below are answers to some of the most common questions clients have about starting therapy. Our goal is to help you feel informed, supported, and confident as you take this next step toward healing and growth
I am an out-of-network provider, which means I do not bill insurance directly. Many clients are able to receive partial reimbursement from their insurance company for out-of-network mental-health services. I’ll provide a detailed superbill (receipt) each month that you can submit for reimbursement. I’m happy to guide you through what questions to ask your insurance provider about your specific benefits. My Therapy page has more information about using out-of-network insurance coverage and submitting claims.
Individual therapy and couples therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. In most cases, we meet on a weekly basis, however I understand that you may have limitations of your time and finances so in many cases a bi-weekly cadence is also available. When we meet for a consultation we typically discuss what might work best for you given your needs and circumstances.
The first session is a collaborative conversation where I’ll invite you to share what’s been happening and what brings you to therapy at this time. I’ll ask follow-up questions to better understand your history, current concerns, and goals—this helps me begin forming a clinical understanding of your situation. At the same time, the session is designed to help you feel comfortable and supported as we start building rapport, which is essential for meaningful therapeutic work
Therapy is designed to help you make meaningful progress in a focused, time-limited way. Evidence-based treatments often work best when they have clear goals and structure—though some concerns naturally take longer than others. My approach is flexible: we’ll begin with an initial assessment to understand your challenges in context, then collaboratively set goals and a plan tailored to your needs. We’ll regularly review progress and adjust as needed, whether that means concluding therapy, extending our work, or shifting focus to new areas.
